The EURAIX Evolution (EVO) data center project for regio iT in Aachen was completed by the Data Center Group (DCG) as general contractor with the successful handover at the end of February 2026.
Construction began with a groundbreaking ceremony in August 2024, marking the start of a project designed from the beginning to meet the highest standards of energy efficiency, sustainability, and readiness for the future. The goal was to create a climate-neutral data center that would set new technical and conceptual benchmarks.
Holistic project implementation from a single source
As a general contractor , DCG worked closely with regio iT and all project stakeholders to ensure the comprehensive design, planning, and management of the data center. A key focus was an integrated approach that interconnected all project phases, ensuring that structural and technical requirements were considered early on.
Sustainability as a core principle
A central focus of the project was the consistent implementation of sustainable construction and operational concepts. Resource-efficient materials were used during construction, and building processes were optimized to reduce waste and improve efficiency.
The building incorporates various façade solutions that provide aesthetic and functional value. Green façade elements improve the microclimate and support the building’s natural cooling.
Additionally, a photovoltaic system was integrated into the roof and façade to sustainably generate some of the building's energy. This is complemented by modern, highly efficient cooling systems, including district heating, which enables an optimized overall energy balance.
These measures form the foundation for the data center's climate-neutral and economically efficient operation.
Technological future viability
In addition to sustainability, the planning phase placed special emphasis on long-term flexibility. The data center is designed to accommodate future technological developments and adapt to changing requirements.
Collaboration as a key success factor
The project's success is largely due to the close and constructive collaboration of all stakeholders. The intergenerational team structure that shaped the project is particularly noteworthy.
Bernhard Barz led the project on behalf of regio iT. This project marks the conclusion of his long-standing career. Working with a new generation of project leaders resulted in a team that was both dynamic and experienced.
"Being able to work on such a project at the end of my career is special. I am all the more pleased that we were able to realize it together as a strong, intergenerational team," said Bernhard Barz, Project Manager for Data Center Construction at regio iT GmbH.
The combination of experience and fresh perspectives was key to delivering the project efficiently and successfully. The project exemplifies how ecological responsibility, technical excellence, and economic efficiency can be combined successfully.
