Data Center Group builds data center for BBT Group
Together with the board of the Caritas BBT Group, the Data Center Group (DCG) has successfully implemented a modern data center. The project highlights the strong partnership with the BBT Group and makes an important contribution to future-proof digital infrastructure in the healthcare sector.
“The construction of the data center is a key investment in the future of our hospital,” emphasizes Commercial Director Jeremia Berschauer. “Digitalization has become indispensable in hospitals and will continue to advance. With the data center, we are now creating the structural and technical prerequisites to be prepared for today’s and future challenges.”
Server capacity for BBT facilities in the region
The new data center is located on the grounds of the Caritas Hospital and is designed to meet the growing demand for server capacity and quality requirements in the coming years-not only for the Bad Mergentheim site, but also for other BBT Group facilities in Baden-Württemberg, as well as the ten BBT senior care centers in the region. Already during the planning phase, DCG considered not only current technical needs but also created additional space reserves for future expansions, such as growth or the use of AI.
More computing power for AI applications in medicine
“The importance of AI applications in medicine is growing rapidly,” emphasizes Dr. Jochen Selbach, Medical Director of the Caritas Hospital. “Even today, AI systems can analyze vast amounts of data in a short time-for example in radiology-and provide indications of tumors, supporting physicians in diagnostics. With the data center, we are creating the foundation for the high computing power required for this.”
Photovoltaic system for power supply
The building was constructed in a modular design on the Caritas Hospital campus, measuring 21 meters in length and seven meters in width. It includes a server room as well as all necessary areas for electrical distribution, cooling, and security technology. To ensure IT operations, DCG plans an emergency power supply via diesel generators. The primary cooling supply is provided by the hospital’s existing cooling system, supplemented by an additional backup cooling system for redundancy. A photovoltaic system will be installed on the building to support energy efficiency.
Highest security standards
“With the new data center, we rely on the highest levels of security and availability in accordance with modern KRITIS standards,” emphasizes Sascha Gerntrup, Team Lead IT Infrastructure at the BBT Group, who supervised the construction on site. “This ensures the reliable provision of all necessary IT services for our facilities.”
From groundbreaking to completion
Construction began with a symbolic groundbreaking ceremony in October involving all project stakeholders. The modules were installed at the end of 2025 and subsequently expanded on site. By the end of March 2026, the structural shell was completed. The handover of the building from DCG to the BBT Group took place shortly after the editorial deadline of this publication. The total investment amounts to approximately €3.6 million, partly supported by state funding.
