A state-of-the-art data center is being developed in Mainz, the capital of the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. From the initial concept and design phases, the groundwork has been laid for a forward-thinking infrastructure project that will meet the growing demand for IT performance, energy efficiency, and security.

The data center is being built for an energy and power utility company based in Hesse. The Data Center Group (DCG) conducted a comprehensive feasibility study of the site in the early stages of development. The result: the location is ideally suited, technically, legally, and environmentally, for the realization of a high-performance data center, with no identified risk factors. Because of this, the project has been consistently developed.

Performance data and site quality

The data center will be built on a 21,538 m² greenfield site in an industrial area of Mainz. The planned total IT capacity is 26 MW, with an electrical connected load of approximately 40 MVA. The modular design allows for gradual expansion in line with actual user demand.

The two-floor building design accommodates two data halls per floor. Technical areas on the roof and an integrated office section complement the spatial concept. The design strictly follows the requirements of DIN EN 50600 (VK 3) and meets the highest standards for availability and operational reliability.

Sustainable construction and material concept

A key feature of the project is its consistent focus on sustainability and resource efficiency. Relevant measures were integrated into the design from the outset.

Concrete, wood, and extensive green landscaping are the primary materials used. The solid construction ensures high structural safety and durability. Green roofs and facades contribute significantly to improving the microclimate, reducing heat islands, and enhancing the ecological value of the site.

The energy concept also follows a sustainable approach: the cooling system incorporates free cooling solutions, complemented by a hybrid strategy combining raised-floor cooling, air recirculation, and liquid cooling. The goal is efficient, cost-effective operation with high reliability.
 

State-of-the-art technical infrastructure

The data center’s power supply is redundantly designed via a 20 kV medium-voltage ring connection. An A/B power supply, modular uninterruptible power supply (UPS) systems, and a scalable redundancy concept ensure maximum operational reliability. The grid connection has been coordinated with the regional energy provider and will allow for a gradual increase in capacity beginning in 2027.

A nitrogen-based gas extinguishing system designed as a multi-zone system for the individual data halls ensures fire protection. Modern access control, video surveillance, fire detection systems, and redundant carrier connections via fiber optics from two directions further enhance the security concept.

Design and engineering consideration for surroundings and approvals

Special attention has been given to integrating the building into the site’s topography. Due to height restrictions, the ground floor will partially be embedded into the slope. Access roads, delivery zones, and entrances will be created using ramp solutions.

A positive preliminary building decision has already been obtained from the city of Mainz. In parallel with planning for the building permit, a BImSchG procedure (Federal Immission Control Act) is being carried out because the total thermal output of the emergency power systems will exceed 50 MW at full build-out. The results of the feasibility study, along with acoustic and environmental assessments, are being incorporated into the planning process.

In conclusion, Data Center Mainz is a future-ready data center representing a new generation of data centers: high-performance, modular, secure, and sustainably designed. Through early feasibility analysis, a clear focus on energy-efficient technology, and the deliberate use of sustainable construction materials, the project establishes a solid foundation for long-term operation.
