Supplying the citizens of Karlsruhe with energy and drinking water is the responsibility of the municipal utilities and the joint partners of EnBW Energie Baden Württemberg AG. More than 1,100 employees at Stadtwerke Karlsruhe ensure that the citizens of Karlsruhe and the region can enjoy this service as undisturbed as possible. The company is particularly committed to ensuring security of supply as well as environmental protection. With sales revenues of over 600 million euros and investments of around 74 million euros, the Stadtwerke Group makes a significant contribution to the economic strength of Karlsruhe.
Data Center Group consulting gave the go-ahead for contacting the Stadtwerke and prepared a risk analysis for the introduction of an ISO 27001-certified ISMS (information security management system). Furthermore, the data center was to meet the current legal requirements from the IT Security Act as well as be subject to a security audit in order to achieve measures to ensure the necessary availability of the IT infrastructure.
The existing data center at Stadtwerke Karlsruhe no longer met current requirements and could not be upgraded at a reasonable cost. The decision was made in favor of a completely new IT system. Through a tendering process "new data center construction" on the part of the Stadtwerke, the Data Center Group then prevailed over the competition as general contractor and was awarded the contract for the construction of a new data center on the greenfield site.
The data center includes:
IT outdoor hall construction (hall construction with earthworks and foundation).
IT security room "F90+" incl. technical rooms "F90".
Extinguishing system Novec1230 & fire alarm system
UPS systems incl. associated electrical sub-distributions
Air conditioning technology (chilled water/ free cooling) and RL technology
Security technology (EMA & monitoring)

The GU project was completely realized in a time line of five months, although this seemed impossible at the beginning for the weather situation of the season (autumn/winter). But in cooperation with the responsible persons of the Stadtwerke Karlsruhe, the whole team of the Data Center Group managed to reach the goal in the given time.
