PBIT Systeme GmbH & Co. KG is an IT system house in Cottbus and a pioneer in sustainability with regard to efficient IT infrastructures. After the Data Center Group advised and supported the company in 2022 in the construction of a secure, highly available and future-oriented data center for the system house, the wish emerged to have this certified as well. In order to officially recognize its sustainability efforts and strengthen its market position, the company decided to initiate the certification process. This certification was intended to take account of the data center's environmental friendliness and highlight its special features.
Due to a structural change in 2023 of the Blue Angel for data centers (more information here), the award criteria of the eco-label have been tightened once again. No reason for PBIT Systeme not to undergo the certification process. On the contrary, the motivation to create a unique selling point grew. The Data Center Group supported the company with its expertise and experience at every stage of the certification process.
The certification process
The certification process for the data center took place in several stages:
- Initial workshops were held to evaluate whether the data center met the requirements for the Blue Angel.
- Based on the results of the workshops, our consulting team prepared a detailed consulting report, which served as the basis for the certification application.
- In the next step, we provided the customer with intensive support in compiling the application documents to ensure that all the necessary information and documentation met the requirements.
- An external auditor carried out an audit and confirmed the data center's compliance with the criteria of the "Blue Angel for Data Centers" eco-label.
- Finally, PBIT Systeme submitted the application together with the external report to the Federal Environment Agency.
The entire certification process took about a year and was confirmed on January 17, 2024.
Challenges and achieving the requirements
Thanks to thorough preparatory work and close cooperation, the requirements for the Blue Angel were met almost without any problems. However, one challenge occurred in the area of energy monitoring, which subsequently showed potential for optimization. The installation of additional measuring points is required for the consistent implementation of energy monitoring. This challenge shows that continuous improvements are necessary in order to maintain and further expand the high standards.
Conclusion
The PBIT Systeme data center is one of only four successfully certified data centers to date in accordance with the new "Blue Angel" environmental label. This marks a significant success for the company, for whom the issue of sustainability is particularly important.
"The close cooperation with the Data Center Group was consistently professional and goal-oriented, and we are pleased that we received comprehensive support during the certification process," says Kay Sander, Managing Director of PBIT Systeme GmbH & Co. KG.
This certification confirms the joint efforts in terms of sustainability and energy efficiency and significantly strengthens the market position of the Brandenburg-based company.
