Upgrading for the future

Relocation and new data center at Glencore Nordenham
References | 02.12.2024

Glencore Nordenham employs over 800 people in Lower Saxony near the North Sea coast. The site, which specializes in lead and zinc production, has been in existence since 1906.
In order to meet the increasing demands on its IT infrastructure, the company decided to build a new data center. The reason for this was an internal relocation, during which the previous premises were changed and the existing data center was to be relocated and modernized.

All-round carefree package

The service package included the turnkey delivery and installation of a complete data center. The suitable solution consists of a modular outdoor data center - the DC IT Container. This includes, among other things

  • Planning and design of the new data center
  • Implementation of a modern fire alarm and extinguishing system
  • Installation of air conditioning systems for optimum temperature control
  • Integration into the existing IT infrastructure.

Fast and secure

The new data center was planned within a month. The realization of the project took about a year in total - from groundbreaking to completion. During this time, we worked closely with those responsible at the parent company Glencore in order to meet their high safety requirements, particularly with regard to occupational safety and fire protection.

The new data center has enabled the company to implement various organizational and technical improvements. The new data center is now better organized and structured, which increases the efficiency of the IT department. Thanks to modern fire protection measures and a stable power supply, the security of the data center has been significantly improved. The new infrastructure also enables a higher capacity, which increases the performance of the IT systems.

Conclusion

The implementation of the project went to Glencore's complete satisfaction. Despite minor challenges such as time pressure and high security requirements, these were resolved quickly and efficiently so that the project was completed without any major problems. The cooperation with the employees on site was extremely constructive and professional.
“I am very satisfied with the project. We were able to rely on DCG from start to finish. Just as we can now rely on a secure and highly available IT infrastructure,” sums up Marcus Holzreiter, Server Administrator at Glencore Nordenham.

Project facts and figures:

  • Fully welded DC IT container in F90 construction 8.5x3.2x3.2m (LxWxH)
  • Burglary protection class RC 3
  • Total cooling capacity 12kW in redundant design
  • Rack enclosure system for efficient cooling
  • 15kVA UPS system
  • Novec 1230 fire extinguishing system
  • DCM Agent monitoring system
