"This is a great project with the Johannes Gutenberg University in Mainz," reports Ralf Siefen, CEO of Data Center Group (DCG). With its more than 100 institutes and clinics, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) is one of the largest and most diverse universities in Germany. As the only German university of its size, the JGU houses almost all institutes on a campus close to the city center. A new building for the university computer center is to be constructed on this campus. This is necessitated by JGU's application to the "National High Performance Computing Center (NHR)" tender In addition, the general renovation of the current location of the Center for Data Processing (ZDV) in the building is pending, which can only take place after the current computing center has been relocated.

The Data Center Group will realize and hand over the new data center in 2023 and 2024 as general contractor. That means being responsible for planning and construction. "We will hand over the new data center on a turnkey basis," explains Siefen.

The planned compact building, with a prominent location at the campus entrance, is to be realized as a high-quality and modern structure that at the same time blends harmoniously into the existing complex. With a curtain wall around the perimeter and screen cladding for the external air conditioning system, the building also gives off a high-quality visual appearance

However, the building is not only forward-looking in terms of design, but also in terms of ecological sustainability: An extensive green roof serves to reduce the CO2 content and the ambient temperature in summer. With a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) value of 1.08, the data center is at the forefront of energy-efficient data centers.

"This is really something special," Siefen emphasizes, pointing out that "here, a Rhineland-Palatinate company is building for another Rhineland-Palatinate company." After all, we are also talking about a larger double-digit million euro order volume.
