Optimizing Data Centers Energetically

SECUrisk introduces weather and energy prediction tool

SECUrisk, a division of the DATA CENTER GROUP, has developed a tool to energetically optimize data centers based on site-specific weather data. With this weather and energy forecasting tool, data center operators can reduce the energy cost of their existing data center by adapting the cooling systems to the local weather with a very high degree of accuracy. For air conditioning systems, which are designed for the construction or optimization of a data center, a qualified determination of TCO and ROI for possible additional investments with high forecast accuracy is possible.
Data center operators can now minimize their energy cost by determining how much cooling energy is needed at their location. How? By using SECUrisk's new weather and energy forecasting tool in order to precisely ascertain the 8760 hours of weather yearly for each location. It uses the statistical data of the German Weather Service as a basis, which are collected in the different climatic zones at 16 locations. Those are supplemented by data, which is calculated individually for each latitude and longitude. The data is also used by data center planners or the people in charge to verify the most energetically sensible form of cooling, in particular by utilizing natural resources, for example indirect free cooling.

In addition, the development forecast of the German Weather Service is integrated until 2045. As the lifecycle of a data center is much shorter than 27 years, operators can also anticipate the development of the weather and thus the future energy requirements. This planning security saves you further investment cost, as they avoid unnecessary safety buffers or systems that are too large - even though the data center is designed for growth.
"We are also expanding our tool in the near future to include plant technologies from different manufacturers. This means that we will integrate the specific operating data and statuses for refrigeration and air conditioning into the program. As each manufacturer naturally has their own specifications, we will be more specific in our recommendations for the required refrigeration", says Dr. med. Dieter Thiel, senior consultant and specialist for energy-efficient data centers at SECUrisk.
