1 year of training, 5 trainees, 999 impressions

Our trainees report on their first year at DCG
News | 07.08.2023

Our trainees have already completed their first year of training—time for them to tell us about their experiences, right? Svetlana will start:

Svetlana - The first year of training is completed

Hello everyone!

I have now worked in three different departments. I started in the marketing and human resources departments. There, I was able to help design the new website (which you are currently visiting). I also had the opportunity to support the human resources department. There, I maintained personnel data and recorded vacation and sick days in tables.

I then moved on to the service department. This is where all maintenance appointments for our data centers are organized. As I was working there at the turn of the year, I was able to help diligently with entering the many regular appointments (regular maintenance appointments with customers) into the calendar and preparing the maintenance logs.

After that, I moved on to purchasing. There is plenty to do here and, as in all other departments, there is never a dull moment. My responsibilities included requesting items from various suppliers, comparing prices, and then placing orders with the supplier offering the best terms. You then receive an order confirmation from the seller, which in turn must be checked for accuracy. The ordering process always involves taking many criteria into account, such as ordering the right quantity of the right product at the right time and to the right location.

But everything is explained step by step here, and you grow into the tasks well.

The next department change comes just in time for the start of my second year of training. Now I will be moving on to financial accounting. I am very excited about new, varied, and exciting tasks and will tell you more about them very soon.

Until then, have a good time!

Melina: Trade fair visits, technical drawing, and many new impressions

Hello, everyone!

It's been a few months since my last entry. All of our commercial trainees change departments regularly, but that doesn't apply to me because I specialize in technical system planning and stay in my department. Nevertheless, I have a lot to tell you. I have settled into vocational school and gotten used to the different school system. At school, we learn technical drawing, how to work with CAD programs (computer-aided design programs), and many other things that you need later in the working life of a technical system planner.

I would also like to tell you about the Electrical Engineering Fair in Dortmund, which I had the opportunity to visit with some of my colleagues. There was a lot to see, and I had the chance to get to know numerous companies in our industry. The companies had their own stands where they presented their products and services. It was very informative for me.

I am also being entrusted with more and more tasks at work. I now draw diagrams, adjust electrical installations, and much more. I am looking forward to all the tasks that lie ahead.

Armagan: Learning by Doing – You learn from your mistakes.

Hello dear readers,

My first year of training is slowly coming to an end, and I would like to report on it and share my experiences. So far, I have worked in three departments: Service, Purchasing, and Financial Accounting. I really enjoyed all of them. In Service, I processed incoming invoices, created and sent orders, created reports for the service technicians, and sent outgoing invoices. All my colleagues were very nice, and if I made a small mistake, it was no problem. That has been the case in all departments so far, because as we know, nobody is born a master. It's not important whether you make mistakes, but how you deal with them. At the end of the day, it's a process of development, and every lesson (even those learned from mistakes) helps you move forward.

After working in the service department, I moved on to purchasing. There, the focus was on orders. Price comparisons, order statistics, and order confirmations are no longer foreign words to me. I am currently working in financial accounting. Here, I have gained a more detailed insight into payment processes. I now know everything a simple invoice has to go through before it ends up in the filing cabinet. So if you are interested or curious, you can apply for an internship with us. With a little luck, we will see you in the future!

Melina – 3 departments, 3 areas of responsibility, 99 valuable experiences

The first year of training is almost over, which is hard to believe. I am now in my third department and will soon be moving on to the fourth. I have already learned a lot during this time.

You can read a short report about my first few weeks here.

My second department was financial accounting, which I also really enjoyed. Invoices naturally play an important role in financial accounting. Invoices document the exchange of goods and services and are an important part of the payment process. As a trainee in financial accounting, it is therefore important to know how to record and process invoices correctly.

I am currently working in the third department, namely project management. This department is also very interesting, as we have a lot of projects on the go and you get an insight into how a project is planned, organized, and monitored. It is also important to keep the customer's needs in mind and to complete the project within the budget and time constraints. I even got to visit the construction sites in Moers and Duisburg. I particularly enjoyed this because it gave me an impression of what is ultimately built after the planning and organization. My tasks included recording our fitters' hours in our system, planning their hotel accommodation, creating acceptance reports, and compiling project documents.

Overall, I really enjoyed working in project management and it showed me how important it is to plan and manage carefully to ensure that everything is completed successfully.

Paul: Construction site visit as a highlight

At the beginning of the training, we were allowed to visit construction sites, where we saw what we would be building on site. My colleagues were also always happy to satisfy my thirst for knowledge on site.

But this time it was different. This time, I was also allowed to carry out tasks on site and help with testing. I also adapted plans so that they could be updated later.

All in all, however, it is always an exciting experience because there is always something different going on and to do.

You can find my full report on my construction site visit hier

In August 2023, we will once again be welcoming new additions to our team – four new trainees will be joining us. Teresa and Leni are starting training as industrial clerks, Daniel is training as a technical product designer, and Paul is completing training as an electronics technician for energy and building technology. How were the first few weeks and months for the new trainees? You can find out in the next part of the trainee blog. Stay tuned!
