Location criteria

Location criteria for data centers

Location analysis is key to reliable operation.

Selecting the right location is essential for ensuring the secure and reliable operation of a data center. The building itself provides the first line of defence for critical IT infrastructure and sensitive data. A variety of factors must be considered, from geographical risks to regulatory requirements.

Criteria for site selection:

Preference is given to regions with a low risk of flooding, earthquakes, or extreme weather conditions.

A stable energy supply with redundant power sources and multiple Internet backbones are essential.

From July 2026, the new Energy Efficiency Act (EnEfG) stipulates that new data centers may only be built near heat consumers — waste heat utilization thus becomes a location criterion.

Access controls, video surveillance, fire protection, and eavesdropping prevention secure the infrastructure against external and internal threats.

A cooler climate supports energy-efficient cooling and reduces operating costs.

For highly available IT services, the German Federal Office for Information Security (BSI) recommends geographically separate locations in order to minimize risks from regional outages.

Location analysis as a basis for decision-making

A professional location analysis provides transparency regarding the opportunities and risks of potential locations. The Data Center Group supports companies in evaluating locations according to technical, regulatory, and economic criteria — and develops customized strategies for secure, efficient, and future-proof data center structures.

Our services:

  • Site surveys
  • Risk assessments in accordance with BSI specifications
  • Assessment of waste heat utilisation and infrastructure
  • Strategic consulting and geo-redundancy concepts
